See also: Combat Encounter

Occasionally, a Monster may attack an investigator at a time other than a typical Combat Encounter. This may occur as a result of a Mythos card, a Reckoning effect, or during the Encounter Phase.

When an investigator is ambushed, they immediately draw one random Monster and resolve a Combat Encounter with it. Some effects may cause a specific monster or a Cultist to ambush the investigator, in which case, always reference this monster's attributes instead of drawing its token. The Monster is considered not spawned. If it has a "when spawned" effect, do not resolve that effect.

Once the encounter is completed, regardless of whether the investigator kills the monster, the Monster returns to the Monster cup or be set aside if it's an Epic Monster. The investigator then continues resolving the effect that caused the ambush.

Unlike a normal Combat Encounter, if an investigator is ambushed by a Monster and he defeats that Monster, he cannot resolve an additional encounter.

An ambush is considered a Combat Encounter for all other intents, purposes, and restrictions. Any Weapon, Spell or other Assets that might apply during a Combat Encounter may be used during an ambush. Effects that allow investigators to put non-Epic Monsters on the card such as Purifying The World or Hunting the Thousand would also work.[1]
